College App Deadlines After May 1

Wednesday, May 13, 2020

Several universities accept students past the traditional May 1 deadline.

The May 1 deadline has passed but hundreds of colleges and universities still take applications. The current admissions cycle is anything but traditional thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on higher education.

Colleges have already announced they would push the deposit deadline to June 1 because of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling has a long list of colleges still accepting applications. Many schools have deadlines stretching far into summer. Both public and private colleges and universities also have financial aid and housing options still available.

Large national universities and small liberal arts colleges are on this list.

The list will remain on the website until July 30 and will be updated as open seats continue to fill up.

The COVID-19 pandemic’s impact has significantly increased the number of colleges with extended deadlines. Many colleges and universities have always offered rolling admissions.

Students should be aware that applying to college late usually means having to make decisions quickly, whether it’s within a few days or a few short weeks.

Whatever it is, students need to know that they aren’t alone in the uncertainty that coronavirus has brought to college admissions and the upcoming fall semester. Several surveys show that prospective students have a lot of uncertainty with regard to what college will look like this year as universities themselves remain unsure of what comes next for the fall semester.

While applying to college during times of coronavirus means not being able to participate in traditional admission visits such as campus visits and admissions events, students can and should take advantage of what is available for them at the moment.

This means looking to online tools such as virtual campus tours and online videoconferences with admissions officers or other prospective students.

It may also be important to recognize that colleges and universities themselves don’t fully know what lies ahead for the fall semester. Some universities say they will have classes on campus but are unsure of what that will look like.

Colleges and universities are being flexible in this time of turmoil.
