Increase Your Career Prospects at University

Thursday, November 4, 2021

The pandemic has impeded many students from finding opportunities to acquire job experience, but here is what you can do to make sure you get time lost back and boost your chances of developing relevant experience before graduation.

March 2020 is a date we are always going to remember as the moment our lives saw a sudden and complete change without precedent because the whole world had to isolate itself to avoid the spread of a killing virus. Our lives as we used to know them changed and our home became our workplace, school, leisure place, as everything we used to do now was transferred to our homes.

For this reason, there weren’t many opportunities for students to do internships or get jobs, as is usually the case, because the world was in such a state of uncertainty, that there was no place for new hirings. They missed out on the chance to acquire experience before graduating college, which is a huge disadvantage, as experience is a demanded requirement among employers when considering candidates for a job.

For the lack of relevant work experience, many students are now really concerned about their employability. However, there are still some things they can do to make sure they acquire experience before graduating.

There are many valuable things they can do outside of the formal workforce that will enable them to boost their employability and give them some advantages when looking for a job in the future.

Boost Your Employability with these Tips

The most pressing thing you must do is develop a deep insight into the sector or field you are interested in working for.

1. Develop valuable skills

Employers not only value knowledge and skills related to your field of studies, but also for transferable skills.

Teamwork, leadership, creativity, time management, problem solving, critical and analytical thinking, communication, initiative, etc. are among the most demanded transferable skills. Make sure you take advantage of the plenty of opportunities to develop technical as well as transferable skills, as they will enable you to boost your CV.

2. Contact other students that work in that sector

You should talk to classmates and other students at your university and see what they do. This way, not only will you be able to see what you can do or where you can work, but you will also be building a positive network of relationships related to the field you want to pursue, which will come in handy in the future.

3. Do online internships

Maybe there aren’t opportunities to do internships the traditional way yet, but you can always apply for virtual internships. There are many employers who offer opportunities to work online, which will enable you to acquire relevant experience and gain insight into the sector you are interested in for your future career.

4. Attend events from employers in the field

Nowadays, you have more opportunities than ever before to connect with people from the comfort of your home. More and more employers are organizing online events, webinars, discussion groups, etc. This way, you will be able to experience firsthand what employers in your area of interest are looking for or put an emphasis on.

5. Talk to assessors

Remember that you are not alone. Many students think that because they are at university, they have to be completely independent. Even though independence is an incredible asset (also considered a transferable skill), we all need help once in a while, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a human need.

For that reason, you should take advantage of the university careers services that are offered to students, which will set you in the right direction.

These are some of the things that will help you boost your employability and increase your career prospects. Make sure you start thinking about your career as soon as possible, as leaving it to the last minute might give you a hard time when looking for a formal job.
